How can I clean my ducts myself?

Jul 22

It's easy to see how dust and grime build up on surfaces.

CAN I CLEAN MY OWN DUCTWORK?

We recommend that you schedule regular HVAC service from an HVAC technician in Tuscon to maintain your system's best condition. You can also clean them yourself, but this is only for professional maintenance.

HOW Often does DUCTWORK need to be cleaned?

Regular DIY cleaning is recommended in addition to annual professional maintenance. These are some ways to clean your air ducts without the need for professional service.

What tools can I use to clean my AIR DUCTS?

You will need to have a few tools in order to clean your air ducts effectively.

  • Vacuum: Make sure your vacuum has a nozzle attachment and hose to reach deeper into your ducts.
  • Brush- You can use a large paintbrush or a toilet brush to do the job.
  • Screwdriver- This is what you will need to remove the vents from your ducts.
  • Paper Towels You'll use them to clean up any stray dust or cover up other supply registers.
  • Air Filter - Once you're done, it's a good idea to replace your filter with a brand new one.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR AIR DUCTS

These steps will make cleaning your AC ducts easy.

  1. Wash the vent covers by removing them. Use a screwdriver to remove the vent covers. To clean them, you can either place them in the dishwasher or wash them by hand. To dry them, place them in a bowl.
  2. Use paper towels to cover vent openings. A few paper towels can be used to cover the supply registers' openings. You can prevent dust from flying out of them and landing on your walls or floors while you clean ducts in the HVAC system. While you can remove the covers for cleaning, it is a good idea that they are replaced after each cleaning.
  3. Remove the dust. Tap the sides of the ductwork with the handle of your brush. This will help to loosen dust stuck to the walls.
  4. It can be vacuumed up. To get rid of all dirt, use the brush and nozzle attachments on the vacuum hose. Use paper towels to wipe down any dust that remains on the walls. Repeat this process for each opening in your ductwork.
  5. Change your air filter. After you have removed some dust from your ducts successfully, make sure to change your filter regularly to keep your indoor air cleaner.
  6. Replace vent covers. Make sure you replace vent covers after you've washed them all.

You can improve your indoor air quality and cleanliness by repeating this process every few months.
